Diode laser hair removal is a beauty-equipment treatment that targets the pigment in the hair to weaken the follicle, giving long-lasting, progressive hair reduction. At Narumi, on Calle Cristo de la Epidemia in Málaga city centre, it is carried out by Marta Fernández with a diode laser fitted with a cooled sapphire tip. A session takes from around 10 minutes (underarms) to over an hour (full body), and most people need 6 to 10 sessions.

When we don't carry it out
If you're unsure about your own situation, check with your doctor first. We'll go through it with you at your initial consultation.
We look at your skin type, the colour and thickness of your hair, any medication you take and whether you've been in the sun. If needed, we do a patch test on a small area before starting your plan.
Shave the area with a razor the day before. Once you start, no waxing, tweezing, threading or epilators, and no sun or fake tan in the 15 days beforehand.
We remove any traces of cream, make-up or deodorant and, where useful, mark out the boundaries of the area with you.
We glide the cooled handpiece over the skin, with the energy set for your skin and hair. We check how it feels and adjust if needed.
We apply a soothing product, go through the aftercare and book your next session to match how your hair grows.
A diode laser emits light that passes through the skin and is absorbed by melanin, the pigment that gives hair its colour. As it absorbs that light, the hair shaft heats up and carries the heat down to the root and to the parts of the follicle responsible for growth. If they receive enough heat, the follicle weakens: the hair that grows back is finer, lighter and sparser, and some follicles stop producing hair altogether.
The key is keeping the heat in the hair rather than the surrounding skin. That’s the job of the handpiece’s cooled sapphire tip: it stays in contact with the skin and cools it before, during and after each pulse. It protects the surface and makes the session far more comfortable than with devices without contact cooling. It’s also why there’s no such thing as a “standard setting”: the energy, pulse duration and pace are adjusted to your skin type, the thickness of your hair and the area being treated.
Hair doesn’t all grow at once. Each follicle goes through three phases: anagen (active growth, with the hair firmly attached to the root and full of pigment), catagen (transition) and telogen (rest: the hair sheds and the follicle takes a break). The laser only really works on hair in the anagen phase, and at any one time only part of the hair in an area is in it. Each session reaches a different group of follicles; the next one is booked once the next group has started growing.
An approximate schedule (we adjust it to how your hair responds):
| Area | Interval between sessions | Approximate sessions |
|---|---|---|
| Face: upper lip, chin, sideburns | 4–6 weeks | 8–12 |
| Underarms and bikini line | 6–8 weeks | 6–8 |
| Legs and arms | 8–10 weeks | 6–8 |
| Back, chest and stomach (men) | 6–10 weeks | 8–10 |
Once the course is finished, one or two top-up sessions a year are usual for hair that “wakes up” over time. That isn’t a failure: it’s simply how follicles and hormones behave throughout life.
Skin types (the Fitzpatrick scale, from I to VI) describe how your skin reacts to the sun: from type I, very fair and always burns, to type VI, very dark and never burns. The greater the contrast between dark hair and fair skin, the easier the laser’s job. The diode can also treat medium and darker skin types with adapted settings; what no adjustment can change is that white, grey or very blonde hair has almost no pigment and responds poorly.
The mechanism is the same for women and men, but the starting point isn’t. Men’s back or chest hair is usually coarse and dense, and hormones keep activating follicles over the years, so it’s worth allowing for a few extra sessions. In women, hair that appears suddenly on the chin, neck or stomach may have a hormonal cause: in that case, your doctor or endocrinologist should look at it first, and laser can follow afterwards.

At Narumi Estética Avanzada & Bienestar, Calle Cristo de la Epidemia 33, in Málaga city centre, a few minutes' walk from La Victoria, El Ejido and the historic centre. We're a beauty and aesthetics centre, not a clinic: we use a diode laser with a cooled sapphire tip, and Marta Fernández, an advanced aesthetics specialist with over 15 years' experience, carries out the consultation and every session. Appointments are in Spanish; you can message us on WhatsApp and we'll do our best to help.
It depends on the area and on whether you choose a single area or a package. You'll find per-session prices for each area and for the packages (bikini with underarms, legs with feet, half body and full body) in the price table on this page and on our prices page. If you're treating several areas, a package usually works out better value. At your consultation we'll tell you which combination suits you.
As a guide, 6 to 10 sessions for most areas, although it depends on the area, the thickness and colour of your hair, your skin type and your hormones. Underarms and legs tend to respond sooner; the face, men's backs or hormonal hair may need more. You'll notice less hair, and finer hair, progressively, and we adjust the plan according to how you respond.
It's uncomfortable, but tolerable. Each pulse feels like a brief flash of heat or a snap, rather like an elastic band flicking the skin. The cooled sapphire tip chills the skin as we work and makes the session much easier. Areas with dense hair and thin skin, such as the bikini line or upper lip, are more noticeable at first; as the hair thins out, the sensation eases. If anything is too much, we adjust the energy.
Yes, as long as the area isn't tanned and doesn't get direct sun in the 15 days before and after each session. In Málaga that's easy for covered areas such as the bikini line or underarms, and trickier for legs, face or back. Ideally, start in autumn so most of the work is done by summer. If you're already tanned, we wait for it to fade.
Yes. The diode is one of the technologies best suited to medium and darker skin types, because the energy and pulse duration can be adjusted so the heat concentrates in the hair rather than the skin. On very dark skin we use more cautious settings and, if needed, a patch test on a small area first. What we always rule out is freshly tanned skin.
Not very well. The laser needs dark pigment in the hair to turn light into heat, and white or grey hair has none. Light blonde and red hair usually respond poorly or unevenly. At your consultation we look closely at your hair and, if we don't expect a worthwhile result, we'll tell you before you start rather than sell you sessions.
Yes. Many men treat their back, shoulders, chest, stomach, neck and nape, or tidy up the beard line on the neck and cheeks. Men's hair tends to be coarser and denser: it responds well to the diode, though it often needs a session or two more than women's, plus some top-ups over the years. You'll find the details on our laser hair removal for men page.
We don't carry out laser hair removal during pregnancy. Hormonal changes also affect hair growth, so sessions would be less effective; we pick up again after the birth. If you're breastfeeding, mention it at your consultation: we don't treat the breast area and, if in any doubt, we'll ask you to check with your doctor or midwife first.
It's best not to promise that. The honest description is long-lasting, progressive hair reduction: after your course, much of the treated hair stops growing or comes back much finer and lighter. Over time, hormonal changes, age or dormant follicles can produce new hair, which is kept in check with one or two top-up sessions a year, depending on the person.
On the face, every 4–6 weeks; underarms and bikini line, every 6–8; legs and back, every 8–10, because hair renews more slowly there. Bringing an appointment forward doesn't speed things up: the laser only works on hair in its growth phase. As the course progresses the interval gets longer, because the hair takes longer and longer to come back.
Yes, and it's what we recommend. A razor cuts the hair at the surface and leaves the root in place, which is exactly what the laser needs at the next session. What you must avoid once you start is waxing, tweezing, threading and epilators, because they pull the hair out. Shave the day before your appointment; if you forget, we'll do it in the treatment room.
